Sandusky Bay Ice Haulers have named Connor Barleben as assistant coach for their Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League baseball team. Barleben currently serves as a graduate assistant with the Ashland University baseball program.
The 24-year-old assistant coach will team with head coach Billy Clay on the field as the Ice Haulers play host to the GLSCL at Sports Force Park at Cedar Point.
“We are fortunate to having Connor join our Ice Haulers coaching staff this summer,” said head coach Billy Clay. “His experience as both a college coach and a player will be valuable to our program and players. I look forward to having him on our team and competing for the championship.”
Barleben returns to the GLSCL as a coach, after playing in the summer league during the 2017 season for the Irish Hills Leprechauns.
The Albion, NY native began his coaching career as graduate assistant for the Ashland University baseball program in 2019, following a successful on-field career as an outfielder and pitcher with the Eagles during the 2017 and 2018 season. In addition, he served as an assistant coach with the Ft. Lauderdale Knights during the 2019 season in the South Florida Collegiate Baseball League, winning the regular season and finishing as runner-up in the season championship.
“I am very excited to join the Ice Haulers staff alongside Coach Clay this season,” said Barleben. “It will be nice to be back in the Great Lakes league since playing in it myself back in 2017. I’m excited for this season as we have a good mix of guys from all over the place. I am very appreciative of this opportunity and looking forward to having lots of success this summer.”
Barleben is a 2018 graduate of Ashland University, with a degree in exercise science.
The Ice Haulers are scheduled to open their 42-game season on June 4 on the road against the Galion Graders, with their home opener on June 5 against the Lima Locos.
