The Sandusky Bay Ice Haulers started off their season with a 2-3 game against the Lima Locos. With the first game of the game series and the first game of the season, the Haulers were amped up and ready to play. The team started the game off with a strong two to zero lead against the Locos, and held the Locos back so they would only score one more run in the eighth inning. Starting on the mound for the Haulers was number 26 Perry Miller, a sophomore from Bowling Green State University. The Ice Haulers had strong rounds at the plate, hitting nearly all to center or right field off of the opposing pitcher, Peyton Nelson of the Lima Locos.
The Haulers wore their powder blue uniforms in confidence as they took the field, they did not allow for the lake effect wind and cool air to impact their playing. Ben Keller, a sophomore from Bryant and Stratton College, picked up the pitching halfway through the game, following freshman RJ Shunck from The University of Toledo. When Ben was asked how the game went for the team he said, “It felt good and I know we had fun. We are still learning, but we are excited for the opportunities.” Third baseman for the Ice Haulers, Hudson Davenport, had played the entirety of the game and said, “We battled hard, especially in the ninth inning. But, we just have to come back tomorrow and play like we know how to.” Davenport is a sophomore from Eastern Michigan University where he plays on the baseball team with a couple other 2023 Ice Hauler players. A familiar face, Eli Snider, returned to the field as the designated hitter for the home team. Snider walked up to the plate four times and hit off of the opposing pitcher, some being caught by the center fielder or second baseman from the Locos, but got on base to advance to second. The Haulers will be back in action for the rest of the home series against the Locos June 7th and 8th on Field 3 at Sports Force Parks, first pitch to be thrown at 7 o’clock.
