As the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League finished up their first week of the season, the Ice Haulers are proud to announce that the second baseman, Scott Mackiewicz (Freshman, University of Toledo) received the first Player of the Week Honorable Mention. Mackiewicz would finish just behind one batter (Noah Marcoux, Muskegon Clippers) for the Player of the Week award.
During his first week of the season, Mackiewicz hit .417 (8-for-17), with one home run, 10 RBIs, and 7 runs scored. “I’m happy for the recognition. Most importantly, I am thankful for the team. I cannot wait to see where the season takes us. We all are improving as players, by building a good chemistry. From here, the team and I just want to keep winning games,” Mackiewicz said. Mackiewicz’s biggest moment last week came on June 11th, when the Ice Haulers traveled to Lima to take on the Lima Locos. The Toledo Rocket would hit his one home run for the week, which happened to be a grand slam. Mackiewicz would tally up 5 RBIs, a stolen base, and two runs for the Ice Haulers, leading them to a 16-7 victory. The Ice Hauler second baseman looks to continue staying hot at the plate and showing consistency as the season progresses.

The Ice Haulers came into today’s game looking for eight consecutive wins, as they took on the North division leaders, the Jet Box Baseball Club. Dino Vecchiolla (Freshman, Seton Hill University) would take the mound for his second matchup this season with Jet Box.
The Ice Haulers came out swinging early, as Drew Holderbach (Junior, Marietta College) would hit a three-run bomb in the top of the third inning. This would extend their lead to 4-0, after a run scored by the Ice Hauler’s leadoff hitter, Zach Campbell (Senior, Tiffin University) in the first inning. However, Jet Box would not go down without a fight as they would score six runs off Vecchiolla in the bottom of the third inning. As Jet Box lead 7-4 in the top of the fifth inning, the young incoming college freshman, Dominic Magliocca (Freshman, Miami University) would hit a solo shot to close the gap, to a 7-5 score. Then, the Ice Haulers would tie the game in the top of the sixth, as Scott Mackiewicz (Freshman, University of Toledo) would hit a ground ball to short-stop. The Jet Box short-stop could not come up with the ball, causing a costly error to give up two runs for the Ice Haulers, as they would tie the game. After a back-and-forth contest between the two teams, the game would end in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the Jet Box Baseball Club hit a walk-off RBI double to win. The Ice Haulers would suffer a tough loss, with a final score of 8-7. The Ice Haulers will look to get back on track, after snapping their current seven-game winning streak. They will head back to Sports Force Parks (Sandusky, Ohio) tomorrow, where they will take on the Lima Locos at 7:00pm. The Ice Haulers came into the game tonight with six straight wins. After a 1-0 thriller victory over the Leprechauns, the Ice Haulers looked to keep the winning streak alive.
On the mound today, Gino Sabatine (Senior, Marietta College) had five solid innings, striking out nine total batters. He would also only allow one run in his high-quality start. For the Ice Hauler batters, during the top of the first inning, Scott Mackiewicz (Freshman, University of Toledo) scored on a wild pitch. Then, the third-baseman Mark Connelly (Sophomore, Lansing Community College) would hit an RBI single. This would lead the Ice Haulers taking an early 2-0 lead. In the top of the second inning, Three Hillier (Freshman, Liberty University) would obtain his biggest hit of the season, with a solo shot to right field. “It is always great to get a win here, after losing by one during their opening night. We are going to be a tough team to beat. In the end, it felt good to finally get a piece of one,” said Hillier. In the top of the third, first baseman, Drew Holderbach (Junior, Marietta College) would hit a solo shot, extending the lead 3-1 for the Ice haulers. “The home run opened up the game and gave us more momentum. It gave us a lot of confidence. It feels good to have a four RBI game. The guys show a lot of support, which builds a good chemistry. This is a great group of guys to work with. We got a lot of wins coming,” Holderbach said. Holderbach also finished with three hits and three runs. There was another valuable moment for the team tonight, as the Ice Haulers welcomed their new left fielder, Nick Mueller (Freshman, Texas A U Corpus Christi). In his first game as an Ice Hauler, he would also join the homerun hit parade. “The home run felt great. I’m excited to work with these guys,” Mueller said. Mueller finished the game going 1-3 with two RBIs, three runs, and a stolen base. As he continues to prove that he is one of the best batters in the league right now, Scott Mackiewicz would have a home run himself, after hitting a three-run blast in the top of the seventh inning. “The Ice Haulers are hot. All we are doing is bringing up our confidence. We got a good one tomorrow against Jet Box. We are having fun, and we can’t wait to keep the homerun balls going,” Mackiewicz said. Mackiewicz has now increased his batting average to .462. After several big hits and home runs hit for the Ice haulers tonight, they would run rule the Graders, 15-1. The Ice Haulers have now won seven straight games, after starting the season 0-5. “It was a great game for all pitchers and hitters,” Coach Bill Clay said. The Ice Haulers will again be traveling on the road tomorrow, as they will head over to Michigan to take on the current division leaders, the Jet Box Baseball Club. The team looks to keep moving up in the standings and continuing to play well as a team. After the Ice Haulers won their fifth straight game in Adrian, Michigan over the Monarchs, the team was looking to stay hot.
On the mound for the Ice Haulers was their ace starter, Landon Smiddy (Sophomore, East Tennessee State University). In contrary, for the Leprechauns was another high-quality pitcher, Derek Clark. The two would contest in a pitcher’s duel, as both pitchers were solid in tonight’s game. Landon Smiddy had seven strong innings against the Leprechauns. He had four strikeouts, giving up just four hits and one walk. Smiddy would also lower his ERA, after not giving up a single run in his seven innings of work. During the eighth inning, the Ice Haulers called Mitchell Spencer (Sophomore, University of Nevada Las Vegas) to the mound, hoping he could carry on the Ice Hauler’s successful pitching against the Leprechauns. Facing his first batter, the Leprechaun third baseman, Hayden Sullivan hit a ground ball to Spencer. However, Spencer would not make an accurate throw to Drew Holderbach (Junior, Marietta College), which would put the lead-off man on first. In the next at-bat, Sullivan would steal second, putting a runner in scoring position with nobody out. Then, Sullivan would advance to third by a 1-3 ground-out to first. This would lead to Spencer facing the top of the order with nobody out. However, he came up with a big strikeout on Trent Farquhar. In the next at-bat, Jordan Andrade (Freshman, University of Nevada Las Vegas) came up with a diving stop at shortstop and would rob the Leprechauns a run after a 6-3 putout. This game would go into ten innings. During the bottom of the tenth, Campbell Conard (Senior, East Tennessee State University) led-off with a double. The Ice Hauler’s would bring in Tyson Mickey (Sophomore, Middle Tennessee State University) to pinch-run for Conard, as they looked to put speed on the bases for that big run they needed. Jordan Andrade would be next to come to the plate. After two unsuccessful bunt attempts, he lined it to center, putting runners on first and third with nobody out. The Leprechauns would intentionally walk the Ice Hauler centerfielder, Zachary Campbell (Senior, Tiffin University). As the bases were loaded, Drew Holderbach would ground to third, allowing Hayden Sullivan to make the force out on Tyson Mickey. Scotty Mackiewicz (Freshman, University of Toledo) would come to the plate, hitting the game-winning sacrifice fly. Mitchell Spencer got the winning decision, as he also tallied up five total strikeouts. After a great pitcher’s duel, the Ice Hauler’s got their first walk-off win in history as a team, with a 1-0 score. “The double was a huge momentum shift. It was a great moment for the team, and we are happy to come out with the win. We’re the hottest team in the league right now,” Conard said. The Ice Haulers will travel to Galion Wednesday, June 16, as they will look for that seventh straight win. After a win in Lima, the Ice Haulers were looking for their fourth straight win, as they would take on the Grand Lake Mariners.
On the mound, Brandon Bergert (Freshman, Seton Hill) showed solid work through four innings. Bergert tallied up three strikeouts and allowed only one run with 2 hits. “I felt like I did well. Threw a lot of strikes. I had a lot of command with that off-speed. This is good win, feels good to be on a good win-streak,” Bergert said. With Bergert’s solid work on the mound, the game remained close at 2-1. However, in the seventh inning the Ice Hauler’s bats would come alive. During the seventh inning, Zach Campbell (Junior, University of Tiffin) would hit a leadoff single. Then, the Mariners gave up an error to Jordan Andrade. Jackson Green would then walk. Then, Scotty Mackiewicz (Freshman, University of Toledo) would score home after a battle rundown between the third baseman, and catcher. Afterwards, Drew Holderbach (Sophomore, Marietta College) would hit a two-run blast to left field, making it 7-1 Ice Haulers. He went 3-5 with four RBIs and two runs. “It feels good, we started rough. We are turning it around as a team. We have a great team, and it is going to be an exciting Summer,” Holderbach said. Jackson Green (Freshman, East Tennessee State University) has also extended his hitting streak to nine games. This means he has not had a game, where he has not gained a hit. “It feels great to keep the streak going. To see the team coming together is awesome. I am glad to be a part of it. Hopefully, I can keep this streak going, and we keep our winning streak going,” Green said. The bullpen for the Ice Haulers would keep the consistency, after a solid start for Bergert. They did not allow a single hit or run. Mitchell Spencer had two solid innings, as well Luke Lushutka (Freshman, St. Bonaventure University). Then, Cal Johnston (Junior, Lansing Community College) would close out the game. After starting 0-5 this season, the Ice Haulers are now 4-5 after winning their fourth straight game, with a score of 9-1. They will continue their road trip on Sunday, June 13, as they will take on the Michigan Monarchs tomorrow. After winning two straight, the Sandusky Bay Ice Haulers looked to gain their third straight win. The Ice Haulers traveled to Lima, as they took on the Lima Locos.
The bats came alive today, as Three Hillier (Freshman, Liberty University) got his first three hits of the season. “Do not let the Ice Haulers get hot. We come to play, and it feels good to be a part of this team,” said Hillier. Tucker McEnroe (Freshman, Texas A&M Corpus Christi) had his second game coming out of his injury and continues to improve. McEnroe had another RBI, and now has extended his RBI streak to two games. “It feels good coming out of injury. Haulers are rolling, and we are not going to stop, “said McEnroe. Jackson Green (Freshman, East Tennessee State University) has yet to go a game without going hitless, as he extends his hitting streak to eight games, after an RBI single in the fourth inning. On the Mound, Dino Vecchiolla (Freshman, Seton Hill) put in five innings of solid work as he would take the win for the Ice Haulers tonight. Lastly, in the sixth inning, Scott Mackiewicz (Freshman, University of Toledo) continued to stay hot at the plate, hitting a grand slam. He had five total RBIs. This contest was a slug fest as there was a total of 23 runs. The Ice Haulers took the win 16-7. The Ice Haulers have now won three straight and improve to 3-5. “These kids have character, and I am happy we are improving,” Coach Clay said. The Ice Haulers will continue their road trip Saturday, June 12, as they take on the Grand Lake Mariners. After a run-rule 13-0 victory over the Grand Lake Mariners, the Ice Haulers took on the Galion Graders for the second time this season, in hopes of their second straight win, and a better outcome since their last matchup with Galion.
The bats came alive early for the Ice Haulers. In the Bottom of the first inning, the Ice Haulers would score three runs, taking a 3-0 lead over the Graders. They would also score three more runs in the fourth, after scoring another run in the third, to extend their lead to 7-0. In the end, the Ice Haulers would win 10-2 to get their second win of the season. Gino Sabatine (Junior, Marietta College) took the mound and tallied up seven strikeouts for the team. “I felt great. I had a great defense behind me, and I am glad we are starting to figure things out as a team,” Sabatine said. Sabatine also only gave up four hits and one walk. He would go through 6.2 innings of work. For the batters, Jackson Green (Freshman, East Tennessee State University) extended his hitting streak to seven games. “It feels great that we are staying hot right now. I am happy to be getting good swings in, but I am happy we are starting to build, and come together as a team,” Green said. Braden Durham (Freshman, Upstate South Carolina) had an impressive performance, hitting three out of the twelve total hits for the Ice Haulers. He would also have an RBI. The catcher looks to continue staying hot at the plate, after an impressive performance as the designated hitter. Scott Mackiewicz (Freshman, University of Toledo) continues to put in great work for the Ice Haulers. Mackiewicz went 2-2 with a sacrifice fly. “I am just happy we are coming together as a team. I hope we continue to put in great work, and hope to stay hot at the plate,” Mackiewicz said. After gaining their second straight win of the season, the Ice Haulers will head on Friday, June 11 to Lima to take on the Lima Locos. After an 0-5 start to the season, the Ice Haulers gained their first win of the season and team history, over the Grand Lake Mariners.

I am honored to be a part of this moment, and happy for the team” said Smitty. In the seventh inning, Brandon Bergert (Freshman, Seton Hill) relieved Smitty, striking out three batters for the last’s outs. The two pitchers would only allow two combined hits, with ten total strikeouts. The bats also came alive today for the Ice Haulers, as Mark Connelly (Sophomore, Lansing Community College) had three of the eight hits for the Ice Haulers. “It’s always a lot of fun getting a win. That’s what this is about, having fun and winning,” said Connelly. Connelly also had four RBIs on the night. Jackson Green (Freshman, East Tennessee State University) increased his hitting streak to six games, and Scott Mackiewicz (Freshman, University of Toledo) had another multi-hit game for the Ice Haulers, with two RBIs. Lastly, Jordan Andrade (Freshman, University of Nevada Las Vegas) had an impressive showing at third base, getting multiple tough outs. The Ice Haulers would win 13-0 in seven innings, due to a run-rule. The squad will be back in action tomorrow, June 10th at 7:05pm, as they take on the Gallion Graders at Sports Force Parks at Cedar Point Sports Center. The Ice Haulers were seeking to find their first win of the season, as they took on the Muskegon Clippers in a double header. the game, there would be over a three-hour rain delay, before the two teams would have a chance to compete. During the first game, Jackson Green (Freshman, East Tennessee State University) pushed his hitting streak up to 4 games, Zachary Campbell got on base 3 times going 2-3 with a walk, and Dominic Magliocca (Senior, Miami University of Ohio) would get his first hit of the season. However, after leaving several men on base during the game, the Ice Haulers would not be able to keep up with the Clippers. Clippers took game 1, 7-1.
During the second game, The Ice Haulers took the first lead in the second inning, after a wild pitch thrown by Bryce Davis for the Clippers, Nolan O’Connell (Sophomore, University of Findlay) would take advantage to give the Ice Haulers a 1-0 lead. However, after a three-run blast in the fifth inning by the clippers, it would seal the win for the Clippers, as they take a 4-2 win in game 2. The Ice Haulers have now fallen to 0-5 during their first ever season as a team. Their next game will be played Wednesday, June 9 at Sports Force Parks, in Sandusky, Ohio. They will take on the Grand Lake Mariners at 7:05pm. After an 0-2 start, the Ice Haulers looked for their first win today in Sandusky. Andino Vecchiolla took the mound today for his Ice Hauler debut. The 6-1 freshman pitcher out of Seton Hill recorded four strikeouts out of five innings of work. Vecchiolla faced 18 batters, and only allowed three hits and two walks (1 BB and 1 HBP).
Along with an impressive performance by Vecchiolla, Jackson Green (Freshman, East Tennessee State University) has now extended his hitting streak for the first three games this season. Green hopes to continue to his streak as the season rolls around. He had two of the eight hits for the Ice Haulers, along with Drew Holderbach (Sophomore, Marietta College) who also had two of the eight hits. Scott Mackiewicz (Freshman, University of Toledo) would tally the only RBI for the Ice Haulers in the first inning. Unfortunately the Ice Haulers took a 7-1 loss to the Jet Box Baseball Club. The team will be well rested and ready for a double header on Tuesday (June 8), as they take on the Muskegon Clippers, at Sports Force Parks (located Sandusky, Ohio). |
